Avoid fraudulent used car details! | Buy used cars with high market value | Ensure the used car justifies its price
My friend Shruti Malhotra’s experience with cars seems quite interesting. She faced too many types of scams when she or her siblings dealt with cars. Shruti has lived in Gurgaon, Haryana, for almost a decade now.
Between March 2025 and March 2026, car sales in India happened to be a soaring forty-seven lakh, a 16% increase compared to the similar period of the previous financial year. These figures give an impression of financial success in society as a whole.
But society has been failing due to rampant scams involving the trade of cars and vehicles. Gurgaon, Haryana, is in no way free from all these scams. The more vehicles are purchased, the greater is the possibility of scams in car trading. In this blog, let us discuss car owners' vulnerability to scamsters involved in car trading.
Car purchasers in Haryana have encountered different car scams. My friend Shruti Malhotra has been one of them. Each type of scam is harmful in its own way to car purchasers. These scams often shook the consciousness of an otherwise skeptical car purchaser like Shruti.
Once, Shruti was head over heels in craving for a Hyundai Tucson. She could not find its real owner. While the VIN, chassis number, and engine number were all genuine on the title, the name of the owner on the title document of the car was not the same as the one available with the authorities.
Often, scammers sell cars that they never owned. These scammers present forged documents as the title documents. If Shruti had failed to find out in time that there was a mismatch in the name of the actual owner of the Toyota Innova and the name of the owner of the Toyota Innova in the forged document, then Shruti might have lost a lot of money, and the scammer would have looted a fortune.
Shruti owned a Mahindra XUV 3XOl. One day, she got a call from a woman, “We have posted an ad for your Kia Carnival on an online advertising portal like Just Dial and OLX. Send me your QR code, we’ll pay you fifty thousand rupees.”
The money was almost 10% of the market price of the car. She had time, and she put a bargain, “Fifty thousand won’t do. How about a lakh?”
Shruti did not receive any money. She reported the matter to the authorities. Later, she heard that the scammer had collected advance fees from interested buyers for the sale of the car but never handed over the key to the car. The reason was obvious. The key had always been with Shruti, never with the scammer.
Nandini, Shruti’s sister, advanced some cash to a dealer for buying a car. The employee who took money from her left town. The employee never gave Nandini a receipt for the exchange of the money.
Kapil, Shruti’s brother, was relocating from Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, to Gurgaon, Haryana. He booked a fleet service to transport his car from Hyderabad to Haryana. The car did not arrive at Gurgaon on the estimated date.
Kapil kept calling his logistics agent in Hyderabad, but he never picked up Kapil’s calls. After contacting his friends in Hyderabad, they located Kapil’s logistics agent and asked for explanations. As a result, Kapil received a call from his agent’s logistics partner, and they demanded, “You have to pay five thousand rupees more, and you have to come to pick up your car.”
Nandini worked in a bank. She shared, “People vanish after taking car loans and never show any parts of the car that they were supposed to buy.”
She also shared that loan defaulters often try to shift the burden of debt to the purchasers of their cars. Unless the purchasers are aware of the owner’s debt, they get trapped in the debt of the previous owner of the cars.
Every vehicle in India must run on the roads with an up-to-date Pollution Under Control (PUC) Certificate. Shruti once bought a used car and she never checked if the previous owner paid for the PUC certificates. She ended up paying fines for all the PUC certificates that the previous owner had ignored.
She shared, “PUC certificates for used cars are generally due every six months. The car owners must get the emissions from their cars checked every six months at a designated pollution check center. Failing to get a PUC certificate within the due date, the owners of the cars have to pay fines as set by the local authorities.”
The fee for checking a car’s emission level ranges between ₹50 and ₹150, depending on the fuel type of the car. But the amount of fine ranges from ₹1000 to ₹10,000.
In Gurgaon, first-time offenders who fail to produce a valid PUC certificate are fined ₹1000, and for each repetition of the offence, ₹2,000. To avoid strife with the authorities and to keep the environment clean, car owners should have PUC certificates.
A Vehicle History Report provides detailed information about a car’s condition. This report produces ownership information and shows conditions of mechanical parts like engine, air conditioner, cooling system, braking system, emission system, fuel System, transmission system, and all. A purchaser of a used car can get a holistic view of the car's condition from this report.
With correct information about the car's ownership and mechanical condition from a Vehicle History Report, the new purchaser becomes empowered with the reality of the car. Scammers cannot deceive them, and they would not end up paying for debts and fines incurred by the previous owners.
Driving a vehicle is not all about control and road safety. Everything about a car starts with the owners’ safety against fraud and their diligence in becoming law-abiding vehicle owners. An aware car purchaser, and in a broader sense, an aware purchaser of any vehicle, not just keeps the roads safe, but also saves themselves from crimes related to the purchase of vehicles. Car Check app/service of AutoHealthTM empowers any vehicle purchaser to be an aware purchaser. Besides, the cost of using Car Check is a pittance compared to all kinds of costs that are involved with the purchase of vehicles. Car Check can be a guiding angel for all aware car purchasers.
Vehicle History Check generates a holistic report on the vehicle’s ownership and all mechanical units of the car that were available with the authorities on the date of checking of Vehicle Information. This report can be generated for all the license plate numbers issued by the authorities.
A Car History Report helps buyers of a car know the car’s ownership and mechanical condition up to the date of checking the Vehicle History. It protects a buyer from fraudsters and scammers. It helps prevent the passing of debt and penalties from the previous owner to the current owner.
AutoHealth takes the license plate number of a vehicle and gives the ownership information of the vehicle, mechanical condition, accident history, and maintenance history of the vehicle. It empowers car buyers with information that protects them from fraud and scams, as well as from passing of debts and penalties from previous owners of the vehicle.
